In 1844, at Yale University, Delta Kappa Epsilon was founded in protest against what they perceived as injustices and limitations of the prevailing societal system. The founders of Deke (pronounced “deek”) instead believed that "the candidate most favored was he who combined in the most equal proportions the gentleman, scholar, and the jolly good fellow" - criteria which have remained unchanged to this day. Almost 175 years later, Deke is one of the oldest and most prominent fraternities in the U.S., counting five presidents among its alumni, the most from any fraternity.

In 1901, the Sigma Rho chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon was founded here at Stanford. In addition to the national values of our fraternity, there are four pillars that unite our chapter: accessibility & inclusivity, mutual accountability & transparency, a willingness to question, and exercising moral responsibility. Although you may have not heard of us, our brothers can be found all around campus. From your dorm RA and peer counselor at the Bridge to the club ski team athlete and the Stanford Tree, our fraternity can be found in all corners of campus life. Several years ago, fewer than 10 brothers were counted in our chapter. This past spring, we doubled in size and we expect to do the same this year. Deke is more than a fraternity; it’s a family and a community that will support you every step of your journey here at Stanford.
